Dear :

As a resident of [YOUR STATE], I’m writing to express support for the protection and recovery of wolves in the Northeast. Because of the wolf’s vital ecological role, its return will enhance the region’s environment. And after centuries of persecution and extermination policies, it is now right and reasonable to restore and protect the wolf.

In 1992 and 2000, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) proposed bringing back the Northeast wolf population, which it considered critical to the “overall restoration of the species.” Since then, progress on wolf recovery has stagnated—and FWS has even attempted to remove the wolf from the Endangered Species List. But recent scientific analyses show that the remote forests and mountains of the northeastern United States (together with parts of southeastern Canada) offer excellent opportunities to conserve and recover natural landscapes and native species. Areas of the Northeast (in particular in Maine and the Adirondacks) clearly provide the conditions necessary to reestablish wolf populations, while other areas would allow wolves to move between hunting and mating areas.

It is part of your mandate to protect endangered species and keep the environment of [YOUR STATE] as healthy as possible. To help achieve these goals, please make sure that the wolf is included on the state list of endangered and threatened species and that regulations are adopted to protect wolves. Please also support federal-level wolf restoration planning for the Northeast.

Organizations and individuals will never give up trying to bring the wolf—a key part of the region’s natural heritage—back to its Northeast home. I hope that you will also work to make this vision a reality.

Sincerely,
