When you read an article on relevant habitat and wildlife issues in your local paper, or when a related event happens in your area, send a letter to the editor supporting wolf recovery and protection. Use the following points as a guide—be sure to mention the ideas raised in the article or what happened at the event and keep the letter short and concise. The masthead and website of newspapers provide addresses to send your letter. If your letter is published, please let us know by writing to crewinfo@earthlink.net.

  • The wolf plays a critical role in maintaining healthy, balanced environments—its recovery is part of honoring and protecting the region’s natural heritage.

  • After centuries of persecution and absence, the wolf has now gained support and begun to make a comeback nationwide—as one of the Northeast’s most majestic, native species, the wolf deserves a chance to return home.

  • Public opinion research shows strong support for wolf recovery.

  • The Northeast has habitat for a sizable population of wolves.

  • In 1992 and 2000, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed bringing the wolf back to the Northeast. Recent federal efforts to remove the wolf from the Endangered Species Act go against sound science and the legal obligation to protect species across their natural ranges.

  • The federal government should begin active recovery planning. And because wolves may find a way to come to the Northeast on their own, states should be prepared by developing recovery and protection plans.
